I've thought of doing 'test runs' in this manner before but was hindered by the 'wasting paper' syndrome! Now that you've got me over THAT concept, once I start painting again this will definitely be in my tool box!! Lynne, I really like this "looking over your shoulder" format. So much more realistic in the time and effort sense. I hope you find it convenient to do more of these because I can actually see you having the same issues I do ... and how you deal with them!! (my biggest problem is dealing with the 'ugly duckling' stage of a painting. These test runs would definitely help with that, too! Thank you :D

Yes! I use subpaintings when I'm stuck on how to continue in the middle of working on a painting, too! It really lowers my stress level to know I can always test or practice a step I'm not sure about by using a subpainting first, and not risk wrecking the painting in progress.

More wonderful info. Love the "think crop" idea. Thank you!

Lynne - Thank you for this advice. I live between two sets of falls on one of the longest rivers in Nova Scotia. My late husband was an avid fly fisherman and I have been trying to paint a picture of him fishing from the row boat and Having trouble. I plan to follow your advice and make some smaller "planning" paintings of the areas I am not pleased with. Thanks, again. Vickie
